Sixteen

Two days before Mac was due to fly out to Melbourne with Callie, she found herself sitting with Kate in a cafe, summoned for a pep talk of sorts. At least that’s what it seemed like to Mac. She prodded at a limp piece of lettuce on her plate.

“I don’t know why you don’t just ask for no salad,” Kate said.

“Because they pile it up with too many chips. I always feel bad sending uneaten chips back,” Mac replied. What she didn’t add was that Callie would normally pick at the extra chips off her plate when she ordered no salad, and she didn’t want that thought to cross her mind right now. She didn’t want to think about Callie at all, but it seemed the more she fought against it, the more Callie popped into her head.

“Maria said you’re going back to work,” Kate said, changing the subject. “You’re not flying out to Melbourne?”

“What’s the point?” Mac replied. “Callie obviously doesn’t want me there.”

“Did she say that?”

“She hasn’t said anything.”

“So, you’re assuming,” Kate said. She bit into her wrap and eyed Mac.

Mac sighed. “What else am I supposed to think, Kate? I’ve left messages for her and she hasn’t gotten back to me. I’m just going to leave her alone. If she wants me back, she knows where I am.”

Kate placed her wrap down onto her plate and wiped her hands on a napkin. “So that’s it, is it? You’re just going to let her walk away?”

“You sound like my mother,” Mac replied.

“So I bloody should,” Kate said.

Mac looked up. It was rare for Kate to lose her cool about anything. “What do you expect me to do? Chase her to Melbourne?”

“Yes,” Kate said. “That’s exactly what I think you should do.”

“It’ll just be a total waste of time. She won’t even answer my phone calls.”

Kate huffed out a breath. “You’d think you’d know more about girls, since you’re actually one yourself. Though sometimes I do wonder.”

Mac dropped her fork onto her plate. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“We want you to make an effort, Mac.”

“I have.”

Kate scoffed. “You have not. This is the first time you’ve left the house since Callie left and you couldn’t have made less of an effort.” She waved a hand in Mac’s general direction.

Mac looked down at her t-shirt. “What’s wrong with what I’m wearing?”

“Nothing,” Kate said. “Except you look like you haven’t slept or showered in a week. You could’ve at least done your hair.”

“I need a haircut,” Mac retorted, which was the truth. She didn’t tell Kate she was right about the not sleeping bit though. She’d gotten so used to Callie being in the bed beside her, it had been hard for her to get any sleep at all. The first night after Callie had left, Mac woke thinking Callie was in bed beside her, only to discover it was a pillow wedged up against her back.

“Sort yourself out, Mac,” Kate said. “And go and talk to Callie.”

“What if she doesn’t want to?”

“Then at least you tried.
